Istead Rise grew quickly through the 1960s and 70s, and with it came a wish for somewhere local to gather. Residents campaigned for a community building, the council was lobbied in 1976, and after planning permission came through the centre was built with help from a wide range of supporters, including many local people. It opened on 29 November 1980.
Soon after opening, the constitution was widened and the organisation became the Istead Rise Community Association. A committee was formed to lead fundraising, and the centre has grown and changed ever since, always with the welfare and enjoyment of the community in mind.

A timeline of the centre
Residents lobby Gravesham Borough Council for a community centre of their own.
Planning permission is granted and construction begins, funded from many sources.
The centre officially opens on 29 November and becomes the Istead Rise Community Association.
An extension adds a generous new lounge bar, a stage and extra storage.
A fire during a break-in badly damages the lounge area.
Work begins to rebuild the centre to its original specification.
A further extension creates the games room, with a pool table and electronic dart boards off the main bar.

A sizeable hall seating more than 150, with its own stage, bar and conveniences. Ideal for functions and events.
Annex & kitchen
An adjoining annex room with a well-equipped fitted kitchen, perfect for smaller gatherings and catering.
Lounge bar & games room
A relaxed lounge bar with a games room alongside, showing major sport across the screens.
Garden
A paved garden with plenty of seating and a barbecue area for warmer days.
Snooker room
Home to a full-size ex-championship table. Hire is £5 per hour, booked in advance through the office.
